What to do in your garden this April

There’s no denying that winter is on its way, but there are plenty of gardening jobs that you can squeeze into these shorter days. Autumn is a great time to plant, as the colder weather gives your new garden residents an opportunity to settle in and develop root systems so that they’re better prepared to withstand next summer’s heat. Spring-flowering bulbs and winter-flowering seedlings are the obvious choices, but don’t overlook your organic veggie patch. For one last late autumn flush, deadhead roses now. Also, remember to mow your lawn a little shorter and give the grass an organic fertiliser for winter resilience. .

THE FIRST STRAW Plant your strawberry runners with a layer of – what else? – straw underneath to avoid any danger of rot setting in on damp days.

EAT YOUR GREENS Everyone knows that all the best and healthiest veggies grow in winter, like broccoli, peas, cabbage and spinach – so get planting!

GO NATIVE Sow seeds of indigenous winter-flowering plants to give yourself the best chance of a glorious, colourful and heart-warming floral display.
