What to do in your garden this December

December is a month when many of us go away on holiday, which is almost a shame given how beautiful our gardens can look at this time of year. To make sure you come back to a garden that’s just as gorgeous, think carefully about your sprinkler settings (especially if rain is forecast) and mulch as much as possible, to keep soil cool and moist. Use organic bug sprays before you leave so that pests can’t establish themselves in your absence. And, sadly, it’s as well to lock away all your garden tools and small ornaments.

PEST WISHES December is high season for all sorts of lawn pests, including termites, mole crickets, ants and lawn caterpillars. Use targeted organic insecticides to zap them.

DON'T BE A SPUD DUD Plant seed potatoes in your organic veggie patch now to enjoy a crop in April or May, so you’ll have plenty of “jackets” to keep you warm during next winter.

FERTILISE UNDER GREY SKIES The best time to apply lawn fertiliser, is when it’s raining. The precipitation will help push the fertiliser down towards the roots, so it gets to work sooner.
