  • Easy guide to Small Gardens

The smaller the garden, the more important it is to ensure that the space available is well planned and taken care of. Due to the limited area you are dealing with, the design principles change slightly, and clever and practical use of the space is essential.
For instance, a pathway double up as a pool surround, and when enlarged will give better access, at the same time providing for a useful patio. A small pool becomes a water feature as well. In a very geometric and rectangular architecture and space, stay with a straight line and not curves unless space allows.

A retaining wall also provides the opportunity for a deeper soil planting area as well as a planter box along a perimeter wall or giving interest to a pool or pond with different levels. The same difference in height can be used to create a raised seat or bench, reducing the need for additional furniture on a patio with limited space. A good idea is to make a cushion to fit the size of the seat for added comfort and colour.

One thing is for sure; a smaller garden due to its nature will need to look good at all times, to be enjoyed all year round unlike a large garden which can have hidden, unkempt areas for part of the year. So the challenge is to keep pots and flower beds full with colour or permanent colourful foliage and flowers. The good news is that all this is available from your friendly nurseryman and garden centre with all the right seasonal stuff to help you keep your garden, patio, townhouse and small garden looking superb all year round. Don’t forget just like us they will need food and watering and, from time to time, some new potting soil and compost even if only a dressing on top of the soil.

Most of all, have fun and hopefully the chapters and pages of this book which deal with design, maintenance, pests and diseases, containers as well as a range of plants suitable for these small gardening spaces will not only get you going but give you years of pleasure in your garden.
