Answer

QUESTION: COULD YOU PLEASE IDENTIFY THIS ALOE?

aloe

From the picture, it would appear that this is Aloe speciosa, with the word “speciosa” meaning showy. It is a single-stemmed aloe and is found mostly in the Eastern Cape; however it will grow in most areas and even in areas where moderate frost occurs. It also seems to be unaffected by snout beetles which are infamous for causing much damage to many other aloes, especially Aloe arborescens, perhaps thanks to the chemical properties of its leaf sap. The common names are: Tilt-head aloe, Horingaalwyn and Spaansaalwyn. When fully open, the flowers will change colour from red to greenish-white.
